Spring, particularly the weeks between late March and early May, represents a disproportionately high window for costly equipment breakdowns. The culprit, in a majority of cases, is a filter that was never replaced at the end of the heating season or before the cooling season began. What follows is not a simple inconvenience. The Dormancy Problem: What Happens to a System That Sits Idle

When an HVAC system transitions from active heating to a weeks-long dormancy — common in much of the US South, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic during the mild shoulder months of February and March — it does not reset itself. 5. Set a replacement reminder. Spring filter loads are heavier than any other season in most US regions. Plan to check your filter every 30 days between April and June rather than relying on a standard 90-day schedule.
