It is typically located behind a small panel in the rear wall of the fresh-food section. Replacement intervals range from six months to one year depending on the manufacturer. Because its failure mode is gradual — slightly shorter produce life, faint persistent odors — it almost never triggers a service call, and almost never gets replaced on schedule.
Range Hoods: The Grease Problem Nobody Wants to Address
The range hood above your stove is doing genuinely difficult work. Every time a burner is lit, it is capturing aerosolized grease, combustion byproducts, and cooking vapors before they can settle on cabinetry, circulate through the home, or degrade indoor air quality. The filters — typically aluminum mesh or baffle-style — are the mechanism through which that capture happens.
Ducted range hoods rely on these filters to trap grease before it can accumulate inside the ductwork, where it becomes both a fire hazard and an airflow restriction. Most manufacturers recommend cleaning or replacing these filters monthly in households that cook frequently, and quarterly for lighter use. Dishwasher-safe metal filters can be cleaned rather than replaced, but they must actually be cleaned — and regularly.
Recirculating range hoods present an additional layer of complexity. Because they do not vent to the exterior, they rely on activated-carbon filters to absorb odors and gases before returning air to the kitchen. These carbon filters cannot be cleaned; they must be replaced, typically every three to six months depending on cooking frequency. Many homeowners with recirculating hoods have never replaced the carbon filter since the appliance was installed — effectively running a filtration system with no filtration capability whatsoever.
Washing Machines: The Filter That Almost No One Knows About
This is the entry that surprises people most consistently. Many front-load washing machines — and a growing number of top-load models — contain a drain pump filter designed to catch lint, small objects, and debris before they can damage the pump or clog the drain line. On most front-loaders, this filter is accessible via a small panel at the lower front of the machine.
Manufacturers typically recommend cleaning this filter every one to three months. Left unattended, it accumulates enough material to restrict drainage, trigger error codes, cause incomplete spin cycles, and eventually contribute to pump failure. Pump replacement on a front-load washing machine is not an inexpensive repair. Neither is a flooded laundry room caused by a backed-up drain line.
Some high-efficiency machines also incorporate lint filters in locations that differ significantly from traditional top-loader designs — check your owner's manual if you are uncertain whether your machine has one, and where it is located.
Whole-House Humidifiers and Dehumidifiers
Humidifiers and dehumidifiers connected to central HVAC systems — or operating as standalone units — contain filtration and media components that require periodic replacement. Whole-house humidifiers use water panels or evaporator pads that accumulate mineral deposits over time, reducing moisture output and potentially circulating mineral dust and biological growth into conditioned air. These panels should be replaced at least once per heating season, and more frequently in areas with hard water.
Portable dehumidifiers and humidifiers often include air filters over their intake vents. These are easy to forget because they are small and the appliances themselves tend to be tucked into basements, crawl spaces, or utility closets — out of sight and out of the maintenance routine.
Why Manufacturers Do Not Make This Easy
It is worth asking why filter maintenance information for these appliances is not more prominently communicated. The answer involves a combination of factors: competitive pressure to advertise features rather than maintenance requirements, the complexity of communicating across diverse usage patterns, and the straightforward commercial reality that appliances sold on durability do not benefit from prominent disclosure of their consumable components.
Owner's manuals contain this information, but owner's manuals are among the least-read documents in the American household. Digital registration and reminder systems exist for some brands, but they are inconsistently implemented and frequently ignored.
